A guide on storing outdoor furniture

With the autumn season quickly approaching,

we believe now is the perfect time to give you some tips on how to store your outdoor furniture.

Despite the harsh winters in Quebec, materials such as cast aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel and teak are generally very resilient to our weather.

The protective cover

The most important element of protection is the protective cover.

It is useful as much in the summer as in the winter. A solution for year-round protection.

It protects the furniture and its cushions from water infiltration, falling leaves, dripping tree sap, etc.

Situated in Mirabel, our manufacturer Cuscini-Design makes these covers using either Sunbrella awning fabric or fabrine.

A cover for protecting a dining table and its chairs is also available, should you not be able to stack your outdoor chairs.

Several of our suppliers offer protective covers as well, which can be purchased at Jardin de Ville.

So, as you can see, many options are available to you!

The second aspect of this cover is the winter aspect.

3 easy steps for year-round protection of your furniture:

1-The box cover includes a bottom panel that is first placed on the ground.

2-The furniture is then placed on top of this panel.

3-The other five panels protect the furniture and are zipped together to form a box.

This is ideal for keeping all of the winter elements from reaching the furniture and for preventing freeze damage that can occur when water seeps into metal frames.

It is important to clean your furniture before protecting it with your cover.

All cushion covers should be removed and cleaned by hand or in the washing machine.

We recommend using a mild detergent and cold water. Cushion covers should never be placed in the dryer.

Once your covers are dry, we suggest using a protective spray such as F-10, in order to restore the water repellent aspect to the fabric.

Food deposits and other types of stains should always be removed immediately to prevent the growth of mold and/or mildew.

All cushions should be stored inside during the winter, while your furniture’s frame can be left outside as long as it is covered.

Elevate the furniture

Materials such as aluminum (whether or not it is covered in wicker), should be stored if possible.

If this is not an option, we must lift the legs and place pieces of wood underneath.

We must also ensure that water can easily escape, should it seep into the structure.

Furniture made of aluminum tends to have tiny holes to aid in the evacuation of water.

As a result, it is discouraged to place any furniture upside down.

Furniture should be protected by a cover and any additional weight should be removed.

Glass and ceramic table tops… inside!

We strongly suggest bringing glass and ceramic table tops indoors well before the first snow fall, as the weight of snow, ice, or falling branches may break these types of materials.

As for the ceramic top, it is also best to store it inside.

However, if this option is not feasible, a cover could be used with one or two balloons ( depending on the size of the table) placed underneath it to allow a favorable runoff of water and snow.

Table tops made of glass and ceramic can easily be placed against a wall inside a garage or under a large piece of furniture inside the home.

Teak furniture

It is discouraged to cover any furniture made of teak, as mold may grow inside the confined space.
