THE DESIGNERS BEHIND SUMMER’S STANDOUT FURNITURE

Every piece of garden furniture tells a story. For instance, do you know who designed LUSIT,  the modular sofa that adds an elegant architectural touch to any patio? How about the sumptuously relaxing NINIX sunbathing chair and adjustable ZEBRA table with ultra-comfortable chairs? What about the MARGUERITE, a unique collection that’s accumulating international awards? We’ve got you covered. Allow Jardin de Ville to introduce you to the designers behind the most beautiful designs of the summer!

CHIC DESIGN: KRIS VAN PUYVELDE AND FRANCK BOSCHMAN

This pair first met in the engineering program at the University of Antwerp in Belgium. Following a trip to Indonesia, where they were seduced by the splendor of the open-air gardens, Kris Van Puyvelde and Franck Boschman decided to change course and founded Royal Botania, a garden-furniture brand with a contemporary aesthetic and timeless style.

Their initial goal was simple: to build on the past and look towards the future. It didn’t take long for them to realize that the fast-made, low-quality, colonial-style furniture in Indonesia, did not live up to their standards. They likewise eschewed the plastic that was so popular in the ’90s, as it did not suit their style.. Instead, the duo turned to aluminum tubing and synthetic fiber, as well as teak, which remains their favorite wood. With those materials, they focused  on a style inspired by nature that integrates their three Es: esthetics, ergonomics and efficiency. When it comes to their craft, they prefer straight over round, rigour over idleness, and restraint over baroque. The resulting designs are chic, purely crafted and available in 190 countries.

Twenty-six years later, the collections they design remain an ode to precision and functionality — there is no excess, and everything  has a thoughtful function and use. A delight for landscapers, the designs transport you, as if you’re dining at a vineyard in Bordeaux or basking on the terrace of a hotel in Costa Brava. In Canada, you can find them at Jardin de Ville. Kris van Puyvelde and Franck Boschman’s outdoor furniture inspires relaxation  while dining al fresco. It looks equally perfect sitting at the edge of a lake or pool, creating an oasis in your garden or dressing up a rooftop terrace in the city — in other words, it’s all about the art of living.

A LITTLE, A LOT, AND ALWAYS WITH PASSION: MATHIAS DE FERM

At only 33 years old — Mathias de Ferm was born in Antwerp in 1985 —and has already accumulated 11 awards, accolades and honours that put him at the forefront of Belgian’s young design guard. Produced by the Joli brand, his MARGUERITE collection, features various elements that coordinate perfectly with one another, from the table to the chaise lounge (which transforms into a small sofa). This outdoor furniture, equal parts  modern and minimalist is no doubt a timeless investment that never fails to charm.

His versatile skillsare demonstrated in his diverse creations, from light, handy and imaginative garden furniture to bamboo kitchen accessories to a litter box for cats made of steel for Mia Cara. “Each project,” says Mathias de Ferm, always brimming with ideas, “is a different experience — the result of a meeting, experimentation with materials, a simplification of forms, a reflection on the environment. Each has its own story and abundance of surprises.” Indeed, the Marguerite collection is a delightful surprise!

THE CRAFTY TRIFECTA: LIEVORE-ALTHERR-MOLINA

In the effervescent city of Barcelona, these three cultivate the art of discretion working for major labels based in Italy, Spain, Germany and Belgium. Alberto Lievore is an Argentinian architect; Jeannette Altherr is a German industrial designer with an interest in objects and children’s spaces; and Manel Molina, is an interior designer from Catalonia. This multicultural trio, a combination of skills and backgrounds, has been working together for more than 20 years.

Striving for flawless modernity, these creative introspection pros, adept at crafting designs free of heaviness, came up with ZEBRA for Fast – a collection of outdoor furniture  createdfrom die-cast aluminum, that’s so efficient you have to see it to believe it. A set of chairs, which come with or without armrests or cushions are stackable for maximum use of space, accompanied by round or square tables, collapsible, and adjustable to three heights: a low table that hovers just above the ground, a coffee table arranged at mid-height, and — just like that — a dining table which you can gather around with ease. Simplifying your living and entertaining needs, this outdoor-furniture collection offers multiple functions and adapts to any occasion, any time.
